Could be shallow, could be true on some level! Then again, whoever says money can buy happiness and thinks it comes from certain places to shop is probably feeding an unhealthy addiction. I have been there. The happiness is very short lived. Considering you have asked this in the philosophy section, I'm dissecting the quote when I know it is just meant to be witty and cute- I have seen it embroidered on decorative pillows- and can relate to it on a 'girls just want to have fun' level! (Though philosophically, it comes across as one dimensional.)

It's one of those comical statements that presume that we say when we are comfortable and happy.

Maslow, a psychologist/sociologist, said we have a hierarchy of needs. When we resolve the basic ones, we then are driven to resolve higher ones. If we do not have basic food and shelter, then happiness does not matter to us and we are more practical in nature. If we are rich and have all our physical needs met, then we look towards social status, friends, position, etc. If we have that, then we look to be self actualized and try to achieve for happiness.

Those that make this statement don't know what it's like to starve or be without family, friends, and opportunity.

If they were without these basics, shopping would be the last thing from their minds.

The statement is a sign of an excessive, greedy, lavish, and oppulent society.

i think when they say that money can't buy you happiness they mean the sort of happiness you get from love and the such, not the material kind of happiness you get when you find a pair of shoes that were quite obviously made for you to wear and look amazing kind of happiness but still I do love to shop :)

Money buys things. Have you ever been to a store and ask if they sell happiness there and if so could you get a discount for it.

All I know, is that the people I have met/known who have said things like...........
"money can't make you happy"
"money isn't that important"
...................................................have never had to worry about it.

Either they had enough, or were being supplied with enough.
