If yes, how long do you allow them to get? If no, how do you control it? Do you make her cut them herself or do you still trim them for her? Do you get resistance from her when you cut them?

why wouldn't you let them grow them out. they're are just fingernails. trust me, with girls that age, you wants to pick and choose your battles. if you try to control every little stupid thing, like her fingernails, you are going to end up with a mess later.

Come to a compromise. Is she is in sports tell her it is better if she does keep them short, that way she will not hurt herself or scrath other players. If she is into sports let her grow her finger nails, but to a reasonable length. But show her the proper way to cut her nails and paint them, just don't let her do this if this is he first time, you don't want het to get hurt or cut to short to where it hurts her. But sit down together and talk it out. Communicate with her. You will get a better response and this will make her feel as if she also has a say in it to. It will turn out much better if you two talk about it. This way the next time she has something to ask you, she knows she can come and talk to you about it or about anything. In the long run you will be glad you did it this way. Good luck to the both of you and God Bless.

Of course! They are just fingernails! Teach her how to maintain them and keep them looking nice. If you are concerned about the length and you have difficulty when trying to cut them or have her cut them...Take her to the local Beauty school and get her cheap but well needed manicures to keep them nice. Ask for a manicurist with nail art skills and then she have cute little pictures or gems put on them!
At least then she can have long nails, and they won't look bad! :)
P.S. Choose your battles! Fingernails shouldn't be one of them! She will be embarking on many new things in the next few years and coming into her own...save the arguments for the bad boyfriends!

I'm not the mother of a pre-teen girl, but I was one at one time. And I don't remember that being an issue...I always wanted to shave my legs before my mom would let me.

As long as they don't have some activity (sports...) in which long nails would hinder their ability, I don't see there being a problem with having long nails. It might be a way to bond if ya'll do your nails together once a week...considering at that age it is hard to find common ground.

I'm 14 and I played basketball earlier in the year and I had to keep my nails short, they can cause A LOT of pain if the ball hits and the nail gets crushed. But since I'm not playing any sports at the moment, I can keep them a little longer. Really I'm not a fan of overly long nails myself. No offence... but this question sounds like Mums of tweens or teens should still be wiping their daughter's asses. Sorry, but they're her fingers... my mum stopped trimming my nails when I was around 7. Unless she plays contact or team sports, it should be 100% her choice whether she keeps them long, short, in good condition or in poor condition.

The length of a young womans nails and hair, are not the battles you should fight. My mother let me do my own fashion when I was a teenager. Yes, I look back and I looked dumb, but at the time I thought it was cool. But God help me if I ever had a grade lower than a B in school. Happened only in math, and I got a full ride to college, let your child pick her own fashion and appearance as long as the more important values are upheld.

I am not a mom of a teen girl or pre teen but I do spend alot of time with my cousin, and she has a teen daughter. she lets her grow her own nails outs, now if they get out of control and they look like crap and stuff then she will take her down and have them done at a nail salon... its a good mom and daughter bonding experiance. I think you cant control things like that with your daughter and if you do then she will learn to not like you. just my opinion.

And no i dont cut there nails they do it themselves (unless they ask me too) and clean them as well, and why would you want to cut your daughters nails, as long as they are clean under neath why is it a problem. show her how to file them and clean under them.
