Assuming he is 4+ months old, I would start off feeding him in the morning, so you will have all day to see if he has an allergy. Once you know he is okay with that food, I'd suggest feeding his cereal at night so he will sleep better and longer.

In Canada, where I live it is ILLEGAL to market baby food to babies under 6 months of age. With good reason. Sure most babies do "fine" starting food before then, but nothing is as nutritious as breastmilk or formula and anything added to the diet takes away from that.
Babies that are exclusivly breastfed past 7 months have almost to anemia. That is because the iron in breastmilk is very easily absorbed, but eating other food can interfere with that. Iron from artificial sources, and vegetables is very hard to absorb. Iron from meat is easier to absorb then that from veggies but still way harder than that from breastmilk.
Rice cereal is really, really awful. It is overprocessed junk that has had all the nutritional value stripped from it and then synthetic vitamins added back in. Also there are some new studies that show that babies can not digest grains until after they are 9 months of age.
Babies under the age of around 6 months also have what is referred to as an "open gut" there intestinal tract has holes in it to help antibodies from breastmilk pass into the babies system. However proteins from other foods can pass as well causing allergies and other problems.
There are many reasons to delay solids and absolutely no good ones to start solids before your baby is actively seeking them out. When the baby is sitting up on his/her own and no longer has the tongue thrust reflex, is grasping things and putting them in their mouth, showing an interest in food at meal times. Also the new rule being adapted here is "If it needs to be pureed the baby isn't ready"
http://www.kellymom.com and http://www.lalecheleague.org are great sources of information on starting solids and other information.

I started one of my children at 4 months, he was a big baby 18 lbs at 4 months. The other two I started at 6 months. None of my children liked cereal, they started on sweet potatoes. Starting solids to early, even cereal in a bottle, is not good. The enzymes in your stomach that help do digest food are not fully developed so giving solids early will only stretch out their stomach and make them hungry sooner. Solids will not help them sleep through the night any sooner, my three did not until they were nine months old.

Between 4 and 6 months. No earlier than 4 but no later than 6. I know we started Izzy on solids at 4 months, but she just didn't take to rice cereal, so we started fruits and veggies. Rice is just the least likely to cause and allergic reaction, thus the reason they say start with that. Rice cereal can cause constipation as well, I know that Izzy can only have oatmeal cereal otherwise she gets sick.

I didn't feed mine until 6 mos. some doctors suggest that if the baby is healthy, they don't need to start solid until they are 6 mos. Of course feeding them earlier is not a crime. I think you just have to see if your baby seems hungry and not having enough to eat. My friend's son was under weight for 4 months (he refused to drink formula sometimes). Her son started to eat solid earlier than mine. Her son has gained weight and healthier. It's all up to your baby. You can offer it to her, but don't force her if she doesn't like it. I know how 1st time can be, I am one of them. I figured that there is no harm in many suggestions if you don't do it exactly the same such as how much to feed or how often. It will get you crazy. I did to me. I have broken my "averages" of the recommendations for my son (not intentionally), but what made sense to me and suitable for my son. He is health as a cow. Don't worry. Your baby will just be fine.

I started my baby at 4 months. I did plain rice cereal for the first 2 weeks. I then added in some green beans and had her eat those for 2 weeks. She is now on squash.

i gave my 2ND baby rice cereal made very thin in her bottle from age 5wks. solids can be started from 4 months up .but every time he starts a new food give him only that food for 3 days ,in that time if hes going to have a reaction he will and you will know exactly which food did it .first comes rice cereal then barley then mixed then one food at a time from there out jars of meat should be introduced only after his body is used to digesting the other foods because these are more work to digest

Start by putting alittle rice in his bottle to thicken it up once in a while, specially at night when you are putting him down for the night!
But they say to start when the baby is 4 months old on solids....
