In once sense, bacteriology started in 1676 when Anton van Leeuwenhoek observed bacteria through a microscope he designed. However, as a discipline, bacteriology is considered to have been founded by Ferdinand Cohn, a botanist who studied photosynthetic bacteria in the second half of the 19th century. So bacteriology has existed as a career for about 150 years.
