Having so many paid surveys available all the time lets you live the kind of life you want.
I travel with my family 3 or 4 months every year! While I'm on vacation, I love to take paid surveys while relaxing on the beach. I can pay for my entire stay in just a few hours of taking surveys!

I've registered with some online survey sites. Some of them send the surveys and then when I've filled in the basic details they will say they have enough people like me answering. One site I use (Mutual Points - google it if you're interested) awards points for internet searches and clicking on to online shops and buying for them. I've been doing this one now for about 18 months and still don't quite have enough points to get the minimum 20 quid yet. Once I've done that, I will be unsubscribing as I think all these survey sites just sell your email address and you end up getting loads of spam emails.

The rule, as always, is to stay away from those that ask you to pay before you can get these surveys.
Legitimate market survey companies such as Pinecone Research recruit members based on demographic characteristics -- e.g. mothers of babies 0-12 years old -- and will send surveys of products and services targeting this demographic group. Pinecone Research, however, pays only $5 per survey -- you're definitely not going to be rich with that. They can give you anywhere from 1-5 at most surveys in a month.
Other companies simply ask you to answer as many research as possible, and you don't earn anything just the chance to win at a raffle (which I find lame).

The best I've done and I've researched it is £2.50 for a 10 minute survey that took me 45 minutes - and I can type fairly fast! although that was clicking on tiny boxes. and moving your pointer to a question on the left of the screen and then to next on the right - total pain!
