I recommend going through the US Patent and Trademark Office and avoiding those commercial inventors services. You will likely need to hire an attorney, but the fees should be reasonable.

You still may end up spending a fair amount of money, but it should not cost you $10k like those services cost.

Do you want to copyright an idea? Or, do you want to patent something you INVENTED?

They are not the same! Make sure you know which one you want to do: First read all of the info on copyright.go

COPYRIGHT info: http://copyright.gov/

Read all of the info on Patents:
PATENT info: http://www.uspto.gov/

Know which process you need for whatever it is you are doing!
