I swam and canoed there 6 years ago. You can see me canoeing in the picture in my Yahoo! 360.

I also got on a pleasure boat cruising there. I sometimes drive around it with my friends seeing very beautiful scenery.

There are places along it where you can barbecue. Unfortunately, I haven't done that though.

Lake Biwa is great - lots of holiday stuff, hotels, onsens, boat rides. Go to Nagoya and you ought to be able to get a train up to Biwa-ko. Actually late autumn and winter, you'll find lot fewer people there (except for the New Year) but it will be cold. Spring and summer are crowded and fall colors of the trees make it a popular place in September and October.

My husband swam there about 30 years ago! He says it seems just like the sea - with waves, etc. - but without the salt..!

I don't know if it's still legal to swim there though ... these things change, as you know...
