A Poltergiest is an angry spirit, that draws energy from a living person in order to manifest, such things as banging, throwing objects and other such phenomena. They are spirits that usually do not know they are dead and think you have invaded their home or territory. They are basically trying to get attention. Some researchers believe that a poltergiest is not spirit, but a living person's own mental ability , usually at times of great stress or anger, or telekinisis, (Moving objects with the mind). One or the other, or in combination, can result in a poltergiest episode.
A so called Ghost, is usally an apparition of a spirit, that is basically harmless, but caught in a place some call Limbo, for lack of a better word. They also usually do not know what has happened to them, and carry on as if they are still living. In both cases of poltergiest or Ghostly phenomena, these spirits draw energy in order to manifest.
Both experiences are rare for most people.

Ghosts are everywhere. A poltergeist usually refers to a violent encounter.

Unlike the movie of the same name, poltergeists are not spirits whose graves have been disturbed. They are, more realistically, energy that is used negatively (most often accidentally) by adolescents. Ghosts are the 'imprint' or spirit of one who has crossed to another plane of existence.

same thing but poltergeists are usually very "physical," as in throwing things, etc. they seem to really want attention.

they're both troubled spirits, one is a little more mischevious than the other and has a higher "Boo" factor (poltergeists that is).
