Does it matter?

No. This rumor began when an episode aired in which he and Patrick lived together and took care of a baby clam that was left on their doorstep. Spongebob played the "mother" role, working tirelessly to take care of the baby and keep the house clean, while Patrick filled the role of the selfish, lazy father.

Christian fundamentalists, the same kind which accused Tinky Winky of the Teletubbies of being gay for playing with a tutu in one episode, spread the rumor which has not only persisted since, but which, unfortunately, has been adopted by the gay community. Spongebob memorabilia is widely popular with gays now, but there has been no conclusive evidence to show that any cartoon character geared toward children under eighteen is homosexual.

Don't believe the hype.

Duh,......he is a "created" child's cartoon character--he is not real, he is not human or animal, he does not have the capability to experience sexual desire or drive.

Not too many sponges I know of have sexual orientations. More to the point, why would you want to label Sponge Bob with a sexual orientation?---that would undermine the fact he is a delightful [though silly] character created to entertain children as an asexual character. If he is, unfortunately, labeled sexually, he will become a "political character" instead of a cartoon character; and "do-gooders" all over the country would begin a boycott.........

I can just see it now......

Sponges are asexual. They reproduce without a mate. That explains a lot doesn't it.

He's gay, as in "happy."
He's not gay, as in "is attracted to other male, sponge-like cartoon characters."
