That man is so dour and predictable!

John Reid is charismatic and tough but i don't think the labour would want an ex commie as leader.

How about Alan Johnson? Bit of a dark horse but i on't know anything about him. is he a credible candidate?

There is already a challenger to Gordon Brown; John McDonnell (Hayes and Harlington) has already announced his candidacy, and is believed to have got the 44 signatures of Labour MP's needed to get on the ballot.

My suspicion is that no other candidate will stand, as they will take the judgement that a divisive leadership contest, where each candidate spends six weeks telling everybody how bad the others are, will do the Party more harm than good. Therefore Brown will not face a serious challenge, but if he loses the next General Election then his position would come under severe pressure.

The fact that John Reid is an "ex-commie" wouldn't work against him (so was Neil Kinnock), but he will struggle to get the 44 names needed to be a candidate basically because no-one in the Parliamentary Labour Party likes him (understandably so!).

Alan Johnson has said that he is only interested in being a candidate for Deputy Leader; I suspect this is an effort to position himself for a challenge to Brown should Labour lose the next General Election.

The only other possible leadership challenger I can forsee is an arch-Blairite such as Alan Milburn or Stephen Byers, but they would not have any serious chance.

John Reid would be a good successor to Blair.

A lot of dark horses candidates could arise. So wait a few months.

Wait until Tony Blair vacates office, and you will be surprised with the number of challengers vying for this position!

I think Saddam Hussein would make a more liberal and far more charismatic replacement.
