According to Lord Krishna's Bhagvad Geeta and 6 non-atheistic philosophies of ancient India the following is considered true :
1. No soul (the one who lives in a body) is destructible
2. All souls are eternal. Always existed and will always exist.
3. You came to this world as a person that you are since your
soul inhabited this physical body (right since the conception, i believe)
4. Before that your soul did exist.
It could have been in an astral body in regions like heavens
it could have been as another person or a life form on this
earth or anywhere in the world where the life forms exist.
It could have been a great person before or an ordinary person
or simply another life form.
5. After death, the law of Karma decides the next life you will lead
it could again be any place mentioned in 4 or something better
or worse

In the last century I was born in an English speaking country. But for as long as I can remember (even as a child), I have had a fascination with the French. Their language, culture, history everything.
I beleive that in my last previous life I lived in France somewhere, some time. I just cannot remember the details.

It's a meaningless question. To paraphrase it, it amounts to "How did you exist before you existed?" It's like asking "What's North of the North Pole?". Just because a question can be formulated, it doesn't mean it has a reasonable answer.
