Standard deviation can be positve or negative, depending on which side of the bell curve you are looking at. If the lhs it is negative and rhs positive. Usually in problems you take it as positive when it is on the lhs, but is stated as plus or minus the s. Zero is the mean value and what is lhs of zero is negative and rhs is positive for normal form and vice versa othervice.
