or would it just create more issues down the road (such as sagging from excessive moisture)?

we have a fan, and the window is kept open all year, even in the cruel new england winter months. what i am wondering is, in a room that is clearly prone to mildew, would installing ceiling tiles be an absolute disaster or a potentially helpful solution?

They are made from acoustic material, thus absorbant, they will sop up moisture and you will not only have mildew but mushrooms as well.

Wash the ceiling with bleach, prime with oil based or shellac based primer. Paint with high gloss oil paint with mildewcide added to paint. Buy it at paint store. I personally like Rustoleum white. Buy a fine mohair roller to apply it or it will dry with a rough finish. It is super white and highly mildew resistant.

I would be interested to know where in the country you live. When I lived in Washington, mildew can occur without any water damage or leaks. It is just the moisture in the air. A good tip would always be sure to run the exhaust fan in your bathroom during your shower. Also, leave the door open, crack a window right after your shower. Use bleach to kill the mildew before you try to cover it. I hope this helps.

Mildew is created by moisture trapped in an area.
all you really need is a fan turned on once a day for a short time.
But FIRST, you must clean the mold/mildew area with bleach. Mold will spread once it begins to grow. Celing tiles will still mold if the moist air isnt moved often.

you have a serious problem but it can be fixed first you have to find the source of the moisture that is causing the mildew and go from there you may need to cover the cieling with plastic before installing the tile.

If there is a water source above bedroom like a toilet or water tank leak in the loft/roof tiles it could be that. eliminate all of these then we must assume it is caused by condensation.

The best way to tackle condensation is to open a window in the morning for a couple of hours to let the fresh air circulate through the room.

Moisture is created by people breathing in their sleep and can be worse if it is two people in one room and especially if room is small.

To treat existing damage. remove defective part of ceiling or if it is just black marks treat it with a mould inhibitor or anti-fungal treatment. something like bleach. disinfectant.

There is lots of other stuff you can do after this if you don't just want to paint over black marks.

Ceiling tiles would not stop the problem. I used some damp-proofing paint I bought from a decorating shop, then painted over it with waterproof kitchen/bathroom paint. That seemed to do the trick. (after thoroughly drying the room out first with a dehumidifier)

The moisture issue must be corrected to stop the mildew, simply covering it up will not work.

We just clean our bathroom with warm water detergent and bleach once a week, and we don't have a mold problem. We don't even have a fan in the bathroom. Try clean more often.

You need to replace the ceiling first to get rid of the mould the tiles would just be a coverup
