Yes! u r right that ur computer is infected with some virus. Or it can be a spyware, trojan, worm just about anything. People here have given u their opinions on what they think is the best software for protection against this malware. But there r two main things they have forgotten to tell u.
First
When ur computer gets infected for long time, the only way to undo the damages is to back up ur important data n reformat ur system. I know thiswill take avery long time but my personal experience of past 3 years tells me that the damage once done continues to bog down system resources(makes it slower than a turtle). please get it reformatted. Get it done by some professional if u dont know how to do it.

Second
They all said to empty temp folders, and remove AOL but did they think once how cumbersome can it get for the end user to do all that? very cumbersome. I suggest u to invest in some good computer care software like system Mechanic 2006

Now, if u follow my advice, after formatting ur system n installing ur operating system, first and foremost install two softwares:
a. an antivirus. Avast home edition for free antivirus that is easy on system resources. Or use Norton Internet Security for comprehensive virus, spyware, hacking and internet misuse protection. U can also use Norton Antivirus 2006 if u have a firewall. But using both will cause ur system to again slow down. Best, go for norton internet security.
b. an antispyware. Preferably Spybot as it is free and also gives real time protection(it means it will try and prevent spywares from gaining access to ur computer even before they do any damage). Install ad-aware personal edition for added security(free version).
Install all latest updates for these softwares.

Then u can install all other softwares including system mechanic 2006. This software will help u mend broken shortcuts, delete temporary files, check disk for errors, check system registry( a file that helps ur Pc to run, kind of a database) for errors, in short a complete system utility to mend slow down problems. U can use this software if u find urPC to slow down after installing, uninstalling, reinstalling of various softwares. u can first use it for a month before u decide to buy or not.
one more thing. Try n avoid using AOL. If u hv read its agreement, it prolly mentions that it is not responsible for the third party content that u get through it if that harms ur PC. It straight away means that they dont take any responsibility if the harm done to ur PC by downloading any of its content that it does not personally approve. and, it is full of such malware.
Hope this helps ya. ALways remember that a little investment that u make in buying good sytem security and comprehensive care software will help u to run ur computer more safely and also help u prtoect ur precious data from being corrupted.

First go here (official Microsoft site) and do the Full Service Scan (click on button)

http://safety.live.com/site/en-US/default.htm

Repeat that scan every week or so. TAKES A LONG TIME. Be patient.

Then get Avast antivirus and activate Windows XP firewall. If you have any other firewall software, uninstall it.

Kaspersky is the best antivirus out there. To search for spyware and to get rid of spyware on your computer which slows you down download Ad-Aware
This are both free programs if you download the free version. Hope this helps.

Look into AVG as a free antivirus software. Ewido also works well.

You can also look into anti-spyware such as Spybot - You would be surprised how much of a niusance they can be.

Its also possible that you simply have a near-full hard drive. Try defragmenting and scanning.

Good luck.

Be sure your temp files are emptied..that will really slow it down. Yahoo toolbar has Norton Spyware scan..it's free. AVG is also Free spyware catcher. I use McAfee which catches all of it but you have to pay for it. If you plan on getting a virus detection DO NOT use Norton..it doesn't work..McAfee is wonderful.
