an external pump will not work, period. somebody else said the tbi requires high pressure to operate. they are correct. i know it is a pain in the a r s e to change it, but that is just how it is. also,
do NOT bother installing an aftermarket pump in it unless you want to do it again. sometimes you'll
get a good one, sometimes you won't. see your local dealer ask for part #'s 25168719 pump, and
25055460 strainer. they should go for about $81.06 pump...$9.91 strainer...unless they really try to rip you off.

You can install a high pressure electric fuel pump outside of the gas tank if you really want to, but you would still need to take out the old pump inside the gas tank or the new pump cannot suck the fuel out. The in tank pump is not that hard to replace and in the long run you'll probably save time and money by just replacing the factory pump with a new one. New fittings and tubing would need to be installed with an external pump and you'd need to make sure you had the right fuel pressure for the system. There are external fuel pumps with different pressure ratings available from either Summit Racing or Jeg's. I think Chevrolet has one EFI system rated around 40 psi and a newer one up around 80 to 90 psi.

The 2 seconds is the programmed strategy of the PCM. When the key is turned on, the PCM will energize the fuel pump for 2 seconds and then turn it off if the PCM doesn't see engine RPM. The logic is not to run a fuel pump for an engine that isn't going to use the fuel. Check the wiring diagram and see if the fuel pump is served also by the oil pressure sender. If so, it may be defective. Good Luck & Merry Christmas

Want to know the easiest way to replace that pump?

remove the bolts from the bed on the drivers side of the vehicle, loosen the bolts on the passengers side, simply tilt the bed, propping it up about 2 feet, you can then remove the fuel sender without even touching the fuel line connections,

lower the bed put the bolts right back, no aligning needed, you wont need a team of men to move the bed,

by doing it this way, you can complete the whole job in under an hour easy

take the bed off, its easier this way. as for an inline pump you can lose volumn because of the restriction from the in-tank pump

check to see what your fuel pressure normally is,or should be. you can find variable fuel pumps with psi adjustments. also V W rabbits, jettas, with electronic fuel injection carry a high psi pump.
