No fireworks at Pier HeadOct 12 2006

By Nick Coligan, Liverpool Echo

A TRADITIONAL Bonfire Night fireworks extravaganza is being moved from Liverpool's waterfront because so much building work is taking place.

The annual event, which attracts thousands of visitors each year, will instead be held at Newsham Park in Fairfield.

The city's two other fireworks spectaculars will take place at Sefton Park and Walton Hall Park as normal on Sunday November 5.

The waterfront display will not return to the Pier Head until 2008 when major construction schemes should have finished.

But organisers are unwilling to jeopardise visitors' safety while regeneration work - such as the waterfront canal link and roadworks on The Strand - is incomplete.

A spokesman for Liverpool Culture Company said: "Construction work by the river means it is not safe enough for a big crowd to gather.

"Work has started on the canal link and The Strand and logistically it would be very difficult to arrange.

"It will also stay away from the Pier Head in 2007, butwill be back for 2008."

Culture managers are also planning what they hope will be Europe's biggest fireworks display to mark Liverpool's 800th birthday next year.

The city's main heritage buildings will be the focus of what promises to be a stunning show of colour and explosions.

The Culture Company is also planning a New Year's Eve fireworks event at the town hall to mark the start of celebrations of the signing of Liverpool's charter in 1207.

Last year, shows at Sefton Park and Walton Hall Park were billed as the biggest ever staged in the city's public parks.
