It doesn't. fat chance means you got no chance an slim chance means you might have a little bit of a chance

Because the use of sarcasm as a linguistic mechanism implies the contrary of its literal meaning. Ie 'fat chance' and 'slim chance' are the contradictory, but by grammatical convention the former is used insincerely
