Just wondering why this is a popular Halloween costume. The movie "Thinner" makes them kinda scary ... but not really.

The term Gypsy actually refers to Roma, which is an ethnic group of people who live in different places in the world. Historically, the Gypsies were nomads and many still are.

Gypsies are no different from any other ethnic group, you have some good folks and some bad folks. Most people are not aware that they were included as "marks" for the Holocaust.

A couple of uncited legends:
At the time of the Crucifixion, no blacksmith would make the nails for the cross. One blacksmith agreed to do so, however, and the spirit of these nails came back to haunt him and his family some years later, forcing them to constantly wander and become the Roma or Gypsies.

Another legend has it that one of the Rom stole the nail that had been made to drive through Jesus' heart, thereby gaining the gratitude of Heaven and the right to steal as they wish for all the Rom.

Gypsies practiced magic that was turned on anyone who crossed them. I am not sure if their descendants still do that, but I am aware of many descendants of gypsies who don't let it be known they have any ties to gypsies. That's pretty sad. I think that your heritage should be celebrated. Maybe it's the celebration that is causing the costume to be so popular. There are many ways to trace the spells the gypsies used on the internet. They were persecuted as witches and warlocks and put to death in many concentration camps.

We unnecessarily fear what we don't know. Probably a defense mechanism. But Gypsies are no more to be feared than witches. Whatever the unfair stereotypes are, they're just another kind of culture, and they generally don't advocate practices that are non-peaceful.

We Americans (especially under the current administration) have proved that we're much more worthy of the world's (as well as our own) fear.

Around here they come by in the spring time with a lot of scams and petty thievery gimmicks.

The police always issue a warning about being careful (lock your car, don't donate to unlicensed people, lock front door if you are in back yard, don't let anyone disassemble your furnace for a "free" cleaning, and hang onto your purse or wallet in crowds).

I don't know if that is fearing them or just being smart enough to be careful around them.

No. Anyway they are generally NOT gypsys, there are very few of them around nowdays. The people you are talking about are didacoys, Irish riff raff! No, I dont have a problem with the Irish, just the scum that come over here and pollute our countryside, ignoring laws and getting loads of money from the government for their millions of kids.

As long as you don't have something really expensive, then no.

Just kidding. They are not bad people.
