Start with the easiest stuff to toss in the garbage. Stuff that you don't have to think twice about. Get rid of it QUICKLY!
Then, if you need space to sort things, MAKE SPACE. Move some things into the driveway. Don't get self-conscious or fearful. This HAS to get DONE. Make sure to open doors or windows to ventilate. The dust will bug you otherwise.
The sorting is brute work. You'll get sick of it, but you have to plug away. Visualize a clean beautiful garage and how much better it will be. Keep that great picture in your head and don't stop until you get there.
Don't start other projects. You may need to go buy some shelving. Make sure it's not too crappy. Make sure your boxes or whatever will fit. Oh, and use a vacuum cleaner as needed to get rid of the layers of dust. (If you need to, rent or borrow a shop-vac.)
Keep going. Don't surrender. Don't retreat.

Follow the rules that they have on cable programs like Clean Sweep. Set aside an area for things you want to keep, another area for things you want to donate, and another area for things you want to get rid of. Then one piece at a time pick up everything in the garage and put it outside in one of those categories. When the garage is empty get rid of the two collections that you are not going to keep. Look at the stuff you want to keep and then see if some shelving or cabinets or racks would help organize that stuff. If so buy it, install it, and load up the stuff onto it.
The trick is that you need to get the whole family to buy in on the idea or in six months it will look just as bad again.

I would take everything out piece by piece and whatever is no good I would put it out for garbage or have a garage sale. After everything is out I would clean the dust with a shop vac.

i think you should start on one side and go through everything...throw away stuff that you arent sure if you want to or not...get plastic bins with lids to put stuff in that arent too big to handle when you have to look through them...have several bins for different stuff and when one gets filled up label it and get it out of your way...get sturdy shelves to hold the bins...make a spot for everything you use and return it when you are done using it....2 or 3 people could knock out a bad garage in a weekend

Set a ending date, to have the project finshed. Pick one wall or corner and do that area. Then move to another and do that area.
Don't set a start date. Always set a date that you are going to be through. That way you don't just start, you finish

Section at a time start in a conner, if you don't finish everything today you've made a good start & you feel like you've accomplished something.
