Hypno therapy with breathing techniques, and TENS work great. You can rent a tens unit and teach yourself how to relax that way also focus your energy off the fear while in route, it is not that $$$. Taking Valium etc.. doesn't help with fear, it is still there enough when you are relaxed physically you are emotionally drained at the end of the flight. Same deal with drinking and taking a friend along to distract those things don't wwork when you are honestly panicked about flying.. Sometimes we have to accept that we are afraid and that we are going to be regardless of what we do and weigh if we really want to do the task in spite of the fear. Only you know how much you are capable of handling. Good luck to you sorting this out.

I would ask my doc for a few 10mg valium. One taken 90 minutes before boarding will totally remove the anxiety. The next flight, use half the pill. The med will substitute for resolve. Very quickly you will realize there is nothing much to fear and will be able to just make it with an in-flight drink, or nothing at all, like me.
I am anxious, prior to boarding, thinking about crashes and terrorists, even though I aam sure it won't happen. But once we are on-board, I focus on how amazing the plane is. I enjoy the fantastic acceleration on take-off and the awesome view from the little windows. Landing is fun, looking out the window in the day and seeing the shadow of the plane on a grass or corn field then the machine touches down and in no time, you are walking through a different airport and making further plans.
Concentrate on the fun of travel! Good Luck--I wish it was me getting out of town!

Please don't be scared, I have wasted so many years because I had a huge fear of flying, I got to almost 48 before I would even contemplate getting on a plane myself, our friend was in a serious accident in Dublin and we had to get there as quick as we could, it was either a 5 hour journey by car to Holyhead plus the time on the ferry or a 45 minuet flight from our local airport, thankfully I was brave and opted for the flight, honestly by the time you get on the plane and settle yourself down, have a good old nosey round at what everyone else is up to and listen to the aircrew waffle on about whats for sale and whats for drinking and eating the flight was almost ready for landing again, the cabin crew are really excellent if your a bit stressed or nervous and will really put you at ease too, I could kick myself for taking so long to get on a plane and in this last year alone I have been a bit like Alan Wicker travelling here and there, I even did a long haul to Cuba and next Easter were going to Australia to visit my family that I haven't seen for over 25 years because I was too much of a wuss to fly, the best thing to do is to get yourself a cheap flight to somewhere like Dublin, its only 50 mins at the most and its breaks you into flying and honestly you really will laugh at yourself for not doing it before now, you go girl and get on a plane and see what you've been missing all these years, good luck.

You should not be afraid. It is far safer in an airplane than traveling by car, bus, or train. When have you ever seen rush hour at 5:00 in the sky??? And hundreds of planes around you to crash into. LOL It is best to sit by window I think, that way you can keep your eye steady on something and doesnt make your tummy quezzy. Once your up, have a drink , relax and enjoy. You'll be there before you know it. Good Luck, hope you enjoy your flight.

I used to be terrified of flying and had to be tranquillised for a 14 hour flight for my honeymoon. It took days for me to feel right again and I couldn't face the loss of control for the return journey.
I took my courage in both hands and made my peace...I accepted that I was probably going to die but then again we all do sometime...
Obviously I didn't, but I learned a valuable lesson...at the end of the day, it is up to you to stay calm and realise that you really do have very little to fear. You probably take more chances walking down the street these days.
My fear trapped me for years and spoiled so many opportunities that were offered to me, now I fly three or four times a year.
You can do this if you really want to...why not take someone with you who you implicitly trust to hold your hand and keep you comfortable?

It is a tough one.
If you feel it is too hard to deal with, just ride a train. Because in the end, it is all about getting on that plane, and holding your breath during turbulence, only to breath a sigh of relief when the thing lands.

i'm scared of heights but love rock climbing.. strange but true.. i even did a parachute jump to try and get over the fear. again great fun but i still dont like heights. my reasoning/solution is find something and concentrate. with climbing your too focused on the next move to think of heights. with th patachute jump you spend more time checking the chutes ok to worry to much.
sleep on the plain or become mentally involved with something to take your mind of it..
remeber fear is rational phobias are not

Tell the airline you are thinking of travelling with that you are a nervous flyer. Some of them do courses that help and it mightn't cost that much. It doesn't cost anything to ask.
