Depends on what the talent is, doesn't it?

Almost 20% of the time. The odds are hypothetically equal when discussing dead talents VS active ones. But reality is another question. People of the same talent are never of the same character. A combination of ambition, realistic approach, hard work, planning and seeing the big picture are more or less the right combinations for a successful talent. Not all talented people possess those combinations, entirely or partially, and , at the same time, not all who possess such combinations are talented.

The 20% is of course hypothetical, but more likely to be true looking at this table:

We can only remember:

‏10% of what we read
20% of what we hear
30% of what we see
50% of what we hear and see together
70% of what we say
90% of what we say and do together

Needless to say, not all sources of the information above are necessarily reliable. Hence, a talented person has to have many other traits, including objectivity and resourcefulness, to be successful. And that type is almost rare.

What is that old saying? Success is 10% aspiration and 90% perspiration.

There are lots of talented people living on the streets. Without the motivation to succeed, all the talent in the world won't make it so.

We are all talented in our own ways. How we apply the talent will determine the success. Having any type of talent is success all in its own.

To quote Joseph Roux, "It is a very rare thing for a man of talent to succeed by his talent." So about 3.2% of the time... :)
