type I is autoimmune and your body destroys the cells in your pancreas that make insulin. Type II is the most common type and is a metabolic disorder that occurs from insulin resistance or lack of the cells producing insulin. Onset can be prevented by maintaining a proper weight, not eating a high fat diet, so eating healthy and exercise. Exercise is super important....i wouldn't trust taking a pill over trying to have a healthy lifestyle...

There are different types of diabetes, and each must be examined on its own.

The Atkins diet will virtually eliminate the type which is caused by eating every day lots of carbohydrates thus producing hyperinsulinism, and eventually producing total resistance to a person's own insulin. I am talking about the type that fat, old people get.

Read Atkins 1992 book on the New Diet Revolution, the 2002 book pretends no one needs supplements on the diet, thus is dangerous.

Diabetes is the inability of your pancreas to control the amount of insulin in your blood. Diabetes can be caused by pancreatitis (failure of the pancreas) due to eating too much sugar, by genetics (it "just happens"), etc.

The only way to avoid it, is to avoid obesity and things that cause pancreas failure, such as eating lots of sugary foods.
