Put the round part of the plunger over the hole at the bottom of the toilet. Push down on the plunger until it stops, then bring it back up to the starting position. Continue at a vigrous pace until you feel the water start to go down.
If the water in the bowl is low you may need to press slightly on the flushing handle to let a little water in or else the water will splash on you. nobody wants to be splashed with poopie water

When in was in the military we had people who clogged toilets on purpose. We kept one of those coiled spring wire drain snakes. A really good one cost $35 or so, but one of the small ones like you can buy at plumbing shops for $8 or $10 is almost foolproof. Don't buy a longer one than you can help, they are clumsy if too long. They usualy roll up in a spool. You push it into the clog, twisting, pushing and pulling as you go. If it gets dirty, hose it off, put it in a place where it can dry. Money well spent for a homeowner.

wrap a plastic bag around the end of a mop, and use it on the loo like a sink plunger. If you havent got a mop use a towell in a plastic bag. The idea is to create a vaccuum behind it.
Good Luck

If a plunger doesn't do the trick, try "Liquid Plumber".
