Let's use some simple language. Protozoa (plural) all the animals in the world that are made up of only one cell. Protozoan (singular) any animal that is only one cell.
They are probably most famous for the diseases they can cause such as malaria.
An example of a one celled vegetable is any bacteria. They cause a much larger variety of diseases than protozoa,
Viruses are not a complete cell, so they are neither protozoa or bacteria.
Not all bacteria and protozoa cause disease.

Protozoa: The phylum is one of the primary divisions of the animal or plant kingdom, and includes the simplest animals. Most are one-celled(unicellular) organisms, although some colonize. Reproduction is usually asexual('a' means 'without'), by means of fission, the splitting into of two or more parts.[Nuclear Fission: When the atom was split, the result was the 'birth' of the Atomic Bomb]. Examples: Protozoa, bacteria, algae, fungi and other lower forms of life, in which the cell or the body divides into two or more parts, each of which develops into a complete 'individual.'

Protozoa (in Greek proto = first and zoa = animals) are single-celled eukaryotes (organisms whose cells have nuclei) that commonly show characteristics usually associated with animals, most notably mobility and heterotrophy. They are often grouped in the kingdom Protista together with the plant-like algae and fungus-like water molds and slime molds. In some newer schemes, however, most algae are classified in the kingdoms Plantae and Chromista, and in such cases the remaining forms may be classified as a kingdom Protozoa. The name is misleading, since they are not animals.

Protozoans are eukaryotic organisms having a body of one cell. They are holozoic and heterotrophic. Many are fee-living such as Amoeba, Paramecium etc. But in almost all groups there are some parasitic forms. like Entamoeba histolytica( Amoebiasis), Leishmania donovani(Kala azar), Plasmodium(malaria), Trichomonas etc.A few are commensal and live in the gut of termites to digest cellulose. Some dinoflagellates are phosphorescent.
They are studied in the lab for pinocytosis, amoeboid movement, cyclosis, nuclear dimorphism, gene amplification , nuclear transplantation etc.

Protozoa are unicellular eukaryotic microorganism that lack cell walls. They are distinguished from prokaryotes by their usually greater size and eukaryotic nature, from algae by thier lack of chlorophyll, from yeast and other fungi by their molility and absence of cell wall, and from slime molds by their lack of fruiting body formation.
