Personally, I love British humor and have very little trouble understanding it. It's a bit odd to be watching Britcom Saturday here on the local PBS with friends, and I'm the only one laughing like a maniac at the jokes. Everyone else sits there and stares at me like a bunch of dead parrots.
So either that Master's Degree in English has finally been good for something, or else I have a very strange sense of humor for an American.
Dad's Army -- the funniest show ever filmed, IMHO! "Stupid boy!"

I had a silly question removed once because some American's took it too seriously. I asked everybody's opinion on whether I should divorce my husband because I'd found out he knew the serial number on the side of the Starship Enterprize off by heart. They were actually answering with things like "well if you would consider getting divorced for that there must be far worse problems that you're avoiding". LOL I even explained that I felt bad that people were taking a joke seriously and trying to help but somebody obviously found me offensive and I got reported. Doh!

British humor isn't all you make it out to be. American humor is just as good, but our television system (23 episodes vs 6) doesn't bring it out as well. Yes, I've enjoyed a number of British comedies, but American television has produced All in the Family, I Love Lucy, Cheers/Frasier, The Golden Girls, and Get Smart, just to name a few in different styles.
Perhaps Y!A draws a disproportionate number of humorless people looking for a fight.

British humour is terrific. I'm so glad that there is a choice of shows to watch on TV. I never watch the regular American shows, but I will always search out a British show.

well I watch the monty Python shows, the british version of the office, and Little Britain, and I understand them quite well and I think they are very funny, maybe I understand it because my grandparents on my moms side where from England, or maybe its just not hard to think its funny, my favorite monty python= the penguin on the tv. The American version of the office is the exact same script as the British version, why we didnt just play the British version I dont know but it is.

Americans do have a good sense of humour! They made The Simpsons and Friends and Buffy and Angel.

OK thats sounds quite a lot like our sense of humor. We use satire and innuendo too, it's just that we are from different countries and don't understand each others'.

No, don't spoil the joke by letting everyone in on it.
It's always funnier if you're the only one who knows why you are laughing.
I love Americans innocence. The pretend to be sophisticated but get all upset if you ask to bum a ***.
I don't smoke but still love to do that one.

I just wonder why they answer so many questions on this site that are obviously meant for the UK and Ireland. Their answers are normally not relevant whatsoever, but they have to answer.
