my husband is back to iraq for the second time, and i completely understand. the best thing to do is just be there for him. theres really nothing you can say to relieve a feeling another person has, but it does help to talk to him and just give him a couple minutes of sanity in an insane situation.

I assume your talking about a soldier. I had a number of close friend killed in training but not in combat. I am a former Canadian Infantry Platoon Commander and do know what he is going through. His best chance, his best friend is to use the training he was given. Next to that it's his commrades in arms. They will do their best not to let him down.
in a sense he's lucky he's in the US forces where they can return fire if fired upon. Canadian Peacekeepers usually have to obtain permission to return fire if fired upon and not from their platoon commander but from headquarters by radio.
I hope your friend returns safe and completely unharmed. I chose to become a soldier and that choice enabled me to save at least 20 lives after becoming a civilian. The training served me well in a dangerous job. I hope your friend benefits in some similiar way.

write to him and send him many wonderful thoughts. Don't reflect so much of the what ifs, but the what nows.
Share all the great stuff that is going on here so he will want to make it back. Tell him you miss him.
Sometimes hearing from those we care for is what we need to win the battle. Knowing we have someone to come home to makes us want to protect ourselves so we can see our friends again.

pray with him asking God to put a shield around him and protect him, and continue to tell him how much his family misses him, that they too want him home, and that he is fighting for a noble cause and for democracy/freedom for the oppressed and to make the world a better place, and that he is making a difference. Tell him to keep his chin up and his spirits high and that your spirit is there with him.

Let him know how much he means to you, and that you're waiting for the day that he comes home.
