Hi,
My home comp (not this laptop) seems to have busted. it was brand new 6 months ago. it just froze during printing something. it was restarted and now all that comes up is a black screen, with white writing saying blah blah
start in safe mode
with coimmand prompt
with networking
with last known good configuration
but you try any one of these and it seems to start, the widnows thing loads, then the dell screen loads then it whirrs, whines and starts up again over and over. no matter what you do or choose.mum also thinks that there's a power light not on.
i've tried everything i know!
we're desperate!

Sounds like your hard drive has crashed. This should be under manufacturer's warranty if its only 6 months old. I'd say return and get a new one.

It does sound as if you've got a software problem. it could be any of the windows sstem files. Windows will automatically restart on error, which is no help to you It's unlikely that your entire harddrive is dead. that's very rare these days.
Dell usually supply a restore disk that will allow you to reset the system to the state it was in when you bought it. Kind of back up. Dig that out. If you don't have the instructions then get on to Dell the problem is software cased by hardware or hardware so you should be covered. they should talk you through the restore procedure. be warned their help desk is in India but stick with it and they will put you on to Ireland where you can talk to someone who's first language is English. Good luck, getting help from Dell can be difficult.

Hardrive gone
Everything for a computer starts up from the hd (HARDRIVE) so it sounds like your boot up process is working but your dell boot up is courupted.
Go on to google and type in bartpe this is a software program startup the computer without manafactures bootup (dell)
if this dowas not work, try using a hard drive out of a old computer.
If that fails i would contact dell and get it repaired or your money back. Get in the car and drive to pc world a get a good quality pc

As computer is only 6 months old I would be surprised if hard drive is your problem. The computer is still under warranty, so contact the person/company you purchased from and request assistance. Don't let local computer guru open it to see if they can repair, it may result in lost warranty, contact retailer or Dell direct for help

If you look in your info, you can restore your system back to factory settings without having to format anything. You will loose all data put on from when you got it so try to start in safe mode (F8) and back up any data. It tells you how to do this in your user manual but if you can not start the computer use your laptop to go onto Dells web site to find out how to do this.
Hope this helps.

could be one of three things
1) a dodgy power connection
2) a faulty fan
3) a cracked motherboard
take it into any shop like PC World and ask them to check it out
they will be able to identify which one it is and sort it
