I'm an IT guy and I've been using Symantec all my life with great success. The only thing I will say to watch out for is the extra stuff like, Symantec Internet Security, Norton/Symantec Firewall, Symantec System Works, etc. You don't really need all that junk. Especially if you have Windows XP with SP2. Just get yourself plain bare bones Symantec Antivirus. Then customize it to your liking - like I would turn off that new annoying thing that runs on the taskbar for instance (the big yellow button that gives alerts). Actually I use Symantec Corporate Edition 10.1 Client rather than the retail antivirus because I like it better. That's made for businesses though and not sold for home use..
I don't like McAfee personally. I have seen Symantec detect more things. I hate McAfee's internet security also - plain junk. Stay away from it.
Trend Micro is also decent but you won't see it in a store very often. You can get it from their website though. Again, only get the bare minimum - regular antivirus without added crap if you can.
WORD OF ADVICE: Stay away from the free antivirus programs. Some people boast about them because they are free and they say they work well but I'm skeptical of anything free. Sure it's better than nothing but they don't have the funding to stay on top of things the way a big company can. Personally I wouldn't put my trust in them. Better to be safe.

I am a clinical psychiatrist, an I have a legal and moral obligation to keep all of my patients/refugees medical data secure.
http://www.avast.com Download their free for home personal use. This is excellent state of the art technology that is light years ahead of any other free or purchased program. Their corporate version is the very same, they just make corporate pay. (They are out of Prague).
You will get daily automatic updates, usually twice or three times per day. If you have your speakers on beside the blue pop-up from the tray, you will hear a male voice, "virus updates have been installed". If you open a webpage with an embedded trojan or virus, the real time scanner in the background will pop-up, and destroy the virus in real time. Plus the voice will also advise you that a virus has been detected, if you keep your speakers on.
Scan your entire system. In my Windows XP Prof., scans all 175,000 objects.
They will ask you for your email address as they will send you a registry key that is good for one year. After the one year is up you will just ask for another key.
Having two computers I also use an antivirus that is used by the Government of China. (This is a purchase, but equal to the above free version). http://www.filseclab.com (They are out of Beijing, China.
Never had one virus with either one in over nine years.
Information, Stay away from Nortons & McAfee., they are pure garbage for many years and keep getting worse each an every year. Plus they will eat up all your resources.
The above two that I use are very low on your resources and gets the job done.
Please if you don't already know, you can only use one antivirus program as using two will cause serious conflict with your system. You can use three or four antispyware without any conflict.

I've got some nomination:
AVG - http://free.grisoft.com/ (my personal favorite's)
Avast - http://www.avast.com/
ClamWin - http://www.clamwin.com/
Don't forget about other security measures -- Firewall (dump Windows Firewall, they're almost as good as none), Antispyware, Track Cleaner, Changes Detector, Host File Blocklist, Anti Pop Ups if you use IE, Alternative Browser
In response to Dirty D
The thing about Free Antivirus, is not that they don't have the financial backing, they _do_ have financial backing, which is, the paid version of the software. From what I've seen, AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/ ) and Avast (http://www.avast.com/ ) is two of the best free Antivirus software, and they have both the free and the paid version of the software.
Do you know what I am concerned of? Pure paid Antivirus. They only have 3 purpose: money, money, and money. They care less for the customers' protection than they care for money. The proof is that they don't care for people that don't pay them.
For a hybrid free-paid antivirus (provide both free and paid), from the fact that they provide the free version means they also care about virus, they care about some people in the world that might got virus every week simply because they won't pay for things they shouldn't have (cause AV shouldn't initially exist, since virus itself shouldn't exist initially). They care about these individuals that might be too lazy to renew subscription and only remembers it after they got a virus (free antivirus never expires, THAT in itself is one of the greatest benefit of free antiviruses).
And if you see the researches, you'll see that most free-paid antivirus have the same detection rate on both the free version and the paid version. The only significant difference is the type of support they'll get, but we all know how much ALL costumer support are, even a paid costumer might prefer peer support (in the form of forums, etc) to the premium support given by some companies for any products, not only AV.

I have Norton Antivirus 2006 Tech Edition, AVG Free, AVG Anti-Spyware, and Ad-aware SE Personal. These programs really work. I have nothing on my computer now. It's all clean. You might have to scan your computer twice a week to make sure it's clean and protected. Bye! Choose mine as best answer.

Clamwin.
I tried AVG, Norton, McCafe and others.
At least, clamwin is free and doesnt consume resource/ memory.
The downside is that sometimes you have to manually scan the download. But everything has a cost, and that includes free antivirus.
