The conformist, sheeplike mentality of the masses.
This manifests itself in the form of religion. It is religion that is the primary source of conflict in the world and the underlying source of the majority of it's problems.
That the horde is only too happy and comfortable to follow is what bothers me about them.
"...it is these ignorant people, the most uneducated, the most unimaginative, the most
unthinking among us, who would make themselves the guides and leaders of us all; who would force their feeble and childish beliefs on us; who would invade our schools and
libraries and homes. I personally resent it bitterly..." Isaac Asimov, 1994
"The whole thing is so patently infantile, so foreign to reality, that to anyone with a
friendly attitude to humanity it is painful to think that the great majority of mortals will
never be able to rise above this view of life."
(Sigmund Freud / 1856-1939 / Civilization and its Discontents / 1931)
"Man is the religious animal. He is the only religious animal. He is the only animal that
has the True Religion –- several of them. He is the only animal that loves his neighbor as
himself and cuts his throat, if his theology isn't straight. He has made a graveyard of the
globe in trying his honest best to smooth his brother's path to happiness and heaven."
(Mark Twain / 1835-1910 / Letters from the Earth)
"The greatest tragedy in mankind's entire history may be the hijacking of morality by
religion."
(Arthur C. Clarke / born in 1917)
"I suggest that the anthropomorphic god-idea is not a harmless infirmity of human thought,
but a very noxious fallacy, which is largely responsible for the calamities the world is at
present enduring"
(William Archer / 1667-1735 / Theology and War
"Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it, you'd have good people doing
good things and evil people doing bad things, but for good people to do bad things, it
takes religion."
(Steven Weinberg / born un 1933 / Nobel Laureate in physics)
"Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious
conviction."
(Blaise Pascal/ 1623-1662)
"What makes you think that human beings are sentient and aware? There's no evidence for
it. Human beings never think for themselves, they find it too uncomfortable. For the most
part, members of our species simply repeat what they are told - and become upset if they
are exposed to any different view. The characteristic human trait is not awareness but
conformity, and the characteristic result is religious warfare. Other animals fight for
territory or food; but, uniquely in the animal kingdom, human beings fight for their
"beliefs." The reason is that beliefs guide behavior, which has evolutionary importance
among human beings. But at a time when our behavior may well lead us to extinction, I
see no reason to assume we have any awareness at all. We are stubborn, self-destructive
conformists. Any other view of our species is a self-congratulatory delusion." ~Michael Crichton.

one thing that bothers me is that most people are stupider than you think, so you have to break things way down to explain them.
