Places like a Sewing Center or JoAnn's give sewing lessons if you buy a sewing machine from them - some are like 6 weeks long and will cover everything needed to both take care of your sewing machine and the types of threads and materials best suited to what you want to make.

Books will only help you so far.
Start by going to a sewing class or joining a sewing circle. It's the best way to get introduced to sewing, especially if you have no idea where to start. You'd be surprised as to how many old women would be excited to help you learn.
Eventually you'll need your own sewing machine, unless you prefer sewing by hand.

I would go and get a basic sewing class. It will at least give you the basics. The problem with sewing when you don't know how, is that your fit might not be good and then the clothes will look funny on you.
There are lots of places that will teach you sewing, including local community colleges, and crafting stores. You can look them up in the local yellow pages.

I don't know if Singer Sewing Center is still in business, at one time they taught sewing. Look in the Yellow Pages under sewing, see if they have a location in the city where you live.

Get the basic lessons or even find the simpliest pattern, Walmart, fabric stores, an give it a try at home.
Just mess around a bit and the patterns will give you most of the instructions that you need
