Do presidential candidates select running mates before or after the primaries?

Traditionally it's usually at the convention, after the candidate for president has been nominated by the party. This is where the fun begins. For a real example, read about the 1944 Democrat Convention. FDR really pulled a few fast ones, vaguely promising the slot to any number of people. Read how Truman eventually got the nod. Very fascinating. I'm trying to remember if some candidates have compaigned with their own personal choice for vice-president before a convention, not counting Bill and Hillary Clinton. But then they really ran as co-presidents. Maybe some of the more obscure parties have run them both together from the get-go. Good question.
