You are inhaling 80% nitrogen all the time. You are still allive because it contains oxygen. If you remove the oxygen and put more nitrogen eventually you will reach a point where you will be dead.

Inhaling too much nitrogen will kill you. The air we breathe contains roughly 21% oxygen and 78% nitrogen. If the oxygen level drops to 19% unnoticeable adverse affects occur. If the oxygen level drops to 16% breathing issues and impaired thinking result. Eventually, if the oxygen level gets too low death will occur in about 40 seconds.

Nitrogen at the partial pressure in the atmosphere has no effect on humans because it can't get into our lungs at that pressure. Increase that (by increasing total air pressure or increasing the proportion of nitrogen), and it can make it into our bloodstream. It's called nitrogen narcosis and it affects divers who go too deep with the wrong mix in their tanks. Basically it's just like being drunk, with a bit more paranoia mixed in. Divers affected have been known to lie down on the sea bed to take a nap, or offer their breathing tubes to passing fish. It also gives a mother of a hangover, too, apparently.

If you read his books, he stated that he inhaled often. Why smoke pot if you are not going to inhale, it sort of defeats the purpose. He is brutally honest about his youthful indiscretions, and that is one of the many things I like about him.
