She returns to school on monday and as part of a test, the kid has to cut open a sheep's lungs. No excuses, especially not the "I'm a vegetarian" one, the teacher has made this clear. Any 100% solid reason how she can avoid doing something she is totally against ? Sensible answers only please. This is about a kid and it's giving her nightmares

She goes to school in England and has no choice but to participate in scence/biology lessons. Her much-missed grandmother died a few years ago, so her dying again is not an option. We would'nt sink to that level anyway.

She's 13 and feels sick at the thought of poking about in dead organs,or any kind of meat. If anyone misses the test, they take it when they return to school. This teacher has accounted for everything ! Thanks to everyone for trying

Jonmc...She is my niece, not my daughter, and while everyone else has kindly offered advice, you have decided to judge. She does not want to dissect because of principles, not because she's squeamish. For your information, although she's a kid, she would help anyone in distress, and has done so in the past.

I would think that nowadays there would be some options that the teacher would allow her. There is some very good technology and should be some program (even on the internet) with virtual dissections, where she can dissect a sheep's lungs without ever being in contact with a real sheep. Is the teacher insisting she do the ACTUAL dissecting...can she have someone else do it and just look on, and as long as she learns what she is suppossed to, there is no reason she has to do any "hands-on" dissection. I know many states in the US have passed laws allowing students NOT to HAVE to dissect..you should do a search on laws in your area, and perhaps talk to the principal about other options the school allows or suggest them adapting a new policy for students that do not feel comfortable dissecting.

Back when I was in highschool, when ever the class had to dissect some animal, the teacher would kindly warn us and let us choose to do it or not.

Vegetarian is not a good excues, cause you're not goona eat your dissection. Perhaps a religious reason? Maybe she should take the day off school, or have a parent kindly speak to the head of the science department about this problem. Some people just can't stand the sight of blood, even if they try to control it. If films with blood and gore have a special classification and warn people, I think she too have a right choose to do the dissection or not too.

Well if she did sign up for a senior science then it would be expected to dissect something. If your niece is in elementary science or a junior science in high school (Grade 9&10) then just make her do as little as possible when it comes to the dissecting the children will be paired up or in groups so she can do little to none if she feels like it. OR you could walk into her class and say her grandmother died to get her out of class and most likey exempt her for doing the lab

I do not quite understand either your reasoning or your daughters. You say she is totally opposed; morally or squeamishly? If moral, you will do the right thing, regardless of others opinions. If squeamish, I hope she never has to help someone in dire need. The excuses you seek does not strike me as quite proper, so I think that I am forced to look for some impropriety here.

You are correcting me as to the relationship to the girl. Your niece? Now I am convinced of impropriety here. I am not a social scientist, so I know we make judgments all day long. Please keep your new age nonsense to your self.

You didn't say why she is against it.
The dissection itself is fairly easy and she will probally be working with a team. If worst comes to worse, as the lungs are first shown, simply act like you're about to vomit and leave the class.

it depends on if she's in junior high, high school, or college.
Ideas to get her out of it:

Schedule a dentist appointment that day
Fake that she has an illness
Allow your neice to lead a protest.
