All four cylinder engined cars have a four branch manifold, this is attached to the side of the engine block usually by 8 studs with nuts and in turn attached to the exhaust. Sometimes the gasket blows and you'll hear a proper racket much worse than a blown exhaust and your car will not run properly.

If it is constructed properly it helps get exhaust gasses out faster. In a well designed exhaust the pulses from each cylinder will help scavange exhaust gasses during the crossover between the exhaust and inlet strokes. A badly designed exhaust can lead to local overheating and burnt valves and pistons.
