Advertisers usually put the word Free for desired attention. When gift is used alone it is usually for a specific person.
"free gifts" is very effective in promos

A free gift is just that. However, depends on the individual giving the gift. While they meant for the gift to be free there are strings attached down the road.

No they aren't all free and when giving you could be out for a lost. Love is free and a gift.

An item that you can get for free, and I think that all gifts are free or it wouldn't be called free.

Of course all gifts are free but when mentioned as a Free-Bee in something some one is selling it's just a gimmic to scam you for your money. Even Freedom isn't free. We have to fight to keep it.

no expectation of reciprocity, or a return.

beware of greeks bearing gifts, if it looks and sounds to good to be true, most of the time thats rule of thumb
