Baseball is considered America's pastime because more people play it competitively than any other, especially when softball is added into the mix.
More people watch football than baseball because it is so structured. You know how long it will last, you know how soon the next play will occur. There is less thinking involved for the average fan watching the game on TV.
As for attendance at the games, baseball still easily wins out.
Even a terrible team like the Detroit Lions can draw 80 thousand fans per game (640,000 per season), When the Detroit Tigers were so bad in past years ago they drew 2,000,000 fans.

It isn't. It is "called" America's pastime. As far as popularity, NFL and colleg football outstrip it by a mile. In reality, MLB is a sport that is incredibly popular in certain regions of the nation and globally...but the World Series TV ratings die year after year.
It might've been "America's pastime" last back in the '50s.
