Is this possible? What is likely hood of such an event occuring, and what effects would we feel? Would we have any warning, and could we stop it?

I work at CERN and I am aware of such a theory (yes, it is a theory, not a rumor).

The theory is simply when the particles(sub-atomic) accelerated toward each other, if they have sufficient energy, they can interact to form a micro black hole. However, because of the mechanics of the situation, the chances of this happening is about one millionth.

As for the consequences, such a micro black hole would emit hawking radiation like all black holes do, and within nanoseconds the whole mass of the black hole would be converted into energy. Also, unlike the bigger cousins, it will not have enough mass to gravitationally attact any matter to gain more mass at all.

So, there is nothing to worry about.

The real worry is the possibility to find evidence of extra dimensions.

:) just joking.

(actually, the mechanics of forming a micro black hole is dependent on the extra dimensions hypothesis - don't ask how, something about two protons entering a dimensional anomaly at the same time)

There are some conjectures that mini-black holes might be formed but it's kind of a view out of the mainstream. If they did form they would be so small that they would immediately evaporate by quantum effects predicted by Hawking....

Here's a nice summary of the whole topic

No, to create a black hole would require the ability to transform energy into matter. Particle accelerators do something entirely different.

As for any warning, there wouldn't be any when your being sucked into the singularity.

WON'T HAPPEN, don't believe all the rumors you here. The technology is not that far advanced. And these people who do this are genius's. But maybe in the future, they can figure it out, but not now.
