The Cardinals were worse than the Pirates after the All-Star break. The White Sox had 7 more victories than the Cardinals in the regular season and didn't clinch the playoffs.

The NL had more parity this year. Sure you had a division winner with 83 wins, but look at how close that division was top to bottom (okay, top to fourth). The NL Central was more competitive than, say, the AL East, home of the 101-loss Devil Rays. Also, since the advent of the unbalanced schedule, teams in the same division play each other more, which can allow for more spreading around of wins throughout the division.

If you don't want a team with 83 wins winning its division, change the regular-season schedule to make it more balanced. Or, add two teams to the AL and have each league go to two divisions of eight teams.

There's nothing wrong with the playoff system. Actually, with the Cardinals now the 7th different MLB champion in as many years, I'd say a lot is right with the playoff system.

No, what happens in the regular season and what happens
in the playoffs are two different situations. The best team is
the team that plays best during the playoffs, and this season
it was the Cardinals. Baseball isn't the only sport that this happens in. Look at Football (Pittsburgh Steelers, a wildcard
team are the defending SuperBowl champions), Basketball
(Miami Heat, who are the reigning NBA champion who weren't the #1 seed in their conference during the 2005-06 season),
and Ice Hockey (Carolina Hurricanes are the defending Stanley
Cup champions, but they weren't even the #1 seed in their own
conference). St.Louis was a good team that won. The previous
two years, they had better regular seasons, but lost in the post-season. It's all about winning in the post-season, when it counts
the most. The regular season isn't as important as the playoffs.
St. Louis won more games in 2005 than the Chicago White Sox,
but they didn't win the World Series. At least they were a division
winner. The Cardinals also won the most games of any MLB team in 2004, but the Boston Red Sox, the AL wildcard team won
the World Series.

This is what happens when you let too many teams into the playoffs. Both St. Louis and Detroit were under .500 in the 2nd half. The Tigers played like 1962 Mets. No team has won the World Series with fewer regular season victories. I have been watching since the early 60's and I am hard pressed to find two worse teams that made it to the World Series.

Why would you say that, because the NL Central is the most competive division in the game today. The Cards still WON the right to be in the Playoffs, then BEAT every team in their way to a World Championship, Because the White-Sox didnt win enough games to DESERVE a Playoff spot don't try and blame another team for it. The AL is the dominant league in the MLB and the Cardinals at least in the regular season would be maybe the 5 or 6th best team in the AL. They need to make a change in the NL because they are way behind.

no the playoff system is not messed up it is what it is dude st.louis won the world series cause they were the better team then detroit who cares that detroit had a better record then st.louis hell the yankees had abetter record then detroit and look at what happend the mets had a better record then st.louis but look what happened the record difference makes no difference come playoff time what matters is who does the things necessary to win such as pitching defense and hitting none of which detroit did well in the series

Given baseball used to be a sport that only let the best two teams in from 1969, I'd say so. I mean, that was one of the worst WS ever and worst champion ever. I mean, get real, the 1985 Cards squad that got jobbed by Denkinger was a far better team as was 1987's.

Just goes to show--get in any way you can and who knows. At least they never won it when Mark McMichelinMan was hitting HRs. That would have been a crime against 'roids.

Well, 2 years ago the Cards had the best record in the regular season, and were swept in the playoffs. This year they played very well in the entire postseason, and WOOOOOO!

That's why they have different leagues and divisions, and a wild-card spot. The White Sox were in a tough division, and the Cards were in an easy division. That's just the way it goes.
