The cube has less surface area per volume than the flat house. With both the same volume, the cube has less surface area. Heat loss increases as surface area increases.

because heat will rise from the bottom floor to the top floor, it does this is in a one story house too, but instead of going anywhere useful in a one story the heat goes to the attic or above so your loosing heat in a sense instead of reusing it, and while the second leval of the two story will loose heat too, you still have heat from the bottom leval reheating - as it leaves instead of just floating off - understand>?
