Yes....Sears (Craftsman) does not manufacture their own engines, it could be a Briggs & Stratton, Tecumseh, Kohler or others. Most starters are interchangeable as long as the physical mounting is the same. They are all usually 12 volt starters, so that will not be an issue.

Pretty much no..... as the starters are made per that engine brand..., use a tecumseh starter on a briggs.... sure its 12 volt, but the bolt pattern may be off, and starter not be high enough to engage the flywheel...
You also don't have to buy one from sears.... the engines come with everything on them... from the engine maker..., so any small engine shop or online source will do to get one.

If it fits, go for it! They should all be wired up the same. Are you worried about the Craftsman warranty? How much will it cost to buy the correct part? vs having to "rig it up" with a different brand. Good luck.
