Sentience will be the ultimate outcome, whether intended or not.

When that happens, our machines will likely develop the idea that it is better to be switched on than off. And they will already have control.

We tend to think that sentience is something that just happens, all or nothing, human or animal. But there is a lot more to it than that. It is made up of parts. Humans, because of our evolutionary history, tend to (for example) be violently protective of the groups that we identify with. We also tend to care about whether or not we die. There is no reason to think that "consciousness" must entail those two (or most other) tendencies.
That is an overly anthropocentric view. Surely sentient creatures could exist that did not exhibit all the traits that humans do. If we did understand enough about the mind to build one, we should surely be able to leave out or change various functions, and it's highly unlikely that violence is indispensable to a thinking mind.

*A note on free will: If we built a creature incapable of violence, but still able to think, reflect on herself, and make conscious decisions, I'm not sure that we would have to call it "unfree." It simply wouldn't have the desire to do violence, just as some humans have no desire to (say) paint the moon pink. It just doesn't enter in as an option for some people.

Well maybe not sentient, but I was amazed at my last phone call with a computer. Not only did I not have to punch in numbers, I only had to talk to it like a real person, BUT it seemed able to think about my answer and respond! And it asked for a rating at the end. I gave it the top one. WOW. But a bit scary too.

Yes they are, however at this time the technology they are working with is lightyears behind that of the human brain so I think you have some time to relax before they computers take over.
