Jefferson Davis delivered this address from the top step of the State House in Montgomery, Alabama , which was serving, for the time being, as the Capitol of the Confederacy as well. In doing so he accepted the presidency of the Provisional Government of the Confederate States of America. Before him lay “troubles and thorns innumerable.”
