I have 1996 Toyota Rav4 with 265K miles on it. I'm getting error code P1770 and the car starts to jerk above 40mph. It get worse when I level off on the speed(cruising). It seems to help if I accelerate and then decelerate continuously, and it's less noticeable at speeds above 75mph. It also seems to get worse as the temperature drops (90 degrees and up it never jerks). I've changed the air temp sensore, plugs , wires, cap, and rotor, air filter, fuel filter, and cleaned the EGR tube. I checked the fuel pressure with a guage (it tested at a steady 54lbs for several minutes) so I know that the fuel pump is fine. The only P1700 code in the Hanes manual is for the transmission, so this is no doubt a transmission code, but for what? Anyone run into this before?

With the mileage you have on the vehicle and what you describe happening it sounds like your transmission is slipping. If I were you, I would go to an auto parts store and buy some transmission conditioner. However, I would say your transmission probably needs rebuilt or replaced. Good Luck!
