Bass is really low and guitar isn't. And I think the guitar player usually has the melody. If you wanna compare it to band, I guess a bass guitar would be a tuba and a normal guitar would be a trumpet or flute.

The first two answers are right so just to add to that, the bass would be the lower cords you hear vs the guitar would be the higher ones.
