The bassist plays the bass, that's the instrument that looks like a guitar but usually has only 4 strings (though it can have more) and it usually helps set the rhythm of the song along with the drums. The guitarist plays the guitar, the one with 6 strings responsible for the melody of the song.

first of all they play different instruments - the bassist plays the bass, the guitarist the guitar. The bass is lower pitched and usually has four strings, but sometimes five, and is slightly bigger that the giutar. A guitar has 6 strings, and a higher pitch, and usually plays the lead because its higher pitched sound sticks out more than the deep sound of the bass

A bass does the background mostly, and a guitarist is most of the time lead. Besides, a guitar can do more than a bass, but a bass does add alot of richness.

Bass is really low and guitar isn't. And I think the guitar player usually has the melody. If you wanna compare it to band, I guess a bass guitar would be a tuba and a normal guitar would be a trumpet or flute.

The first two answers are right so just to add to that, the bass would be the lower cords you hear vs the guitar would be the higher ones.

That's what I'd like to know.. I always say, "that guy is playing the guitar!" And my Brother says, "no dummy that's a bass player!"
Like in the band queen. there's an amazing guitar player named you his name. and the other guy played the bass. "Brian May" is one of the worlds best guitar players.
