It is a small tube which connects the inner ear and the throat. It equalises pressure and stops the ear drum from bursting in areas of high or low pressure eg under water or on a mountain.

Definition Eustachian tube patency refers to how much the eustachian tube is open. The eustachian tube runs between the middle ear and the throat. This tube regulates the pressure around the ear drum. Patency is the normal state of the eustachian tube. Ear infections or altitude changes can increase pressure in the ear, causing the eustachian tube to become blocked. Alternative Therapies An alternative method of relieving the pain felt by an earache is to have a physician or chiropractor perform endonasal therapy, which is a useful form of local treatment for catarrh problems. Endonasal therapy is a basic treatment used to initiate the draining and cleansing processes necessary to remove congestion in the Eustachian tubes.

It's Primary Function is Pressure Equalization Between the Middle and Outer Ear. Not Normally Fluid Filled. It has Nothing to Do With Balance. See an Anatomy Text. BTW, as a Side Issue, Two Muscles (and Only Two) Receive their Motor Innervation From the Trigeminal Nerve, they Are, Tensor Veli Palitini and Massiter, I don't Know What Division, but Suspect it is the V2.
I Have Since Looked on Wikipedia, They Cite 8 Muscles and V3:
* masseter
* temporalis
* medial pterygoid
* lateral pterygoid
* tensor veli palatini
* mylohyoid
* anterior belly digastric
* tensor tympani
I don't Know What is Correct, I May Be Dead Wrong.

I'm pretty sure it's your ear canal. Either that or it's the tube leading away from your ear canal that allows pressure to be relieved for instances like when you're in a plane and you take off.
