Hey Julie,

William the Conquorer was an ancestor of mine. Wish I had the answers on the top of my head, but here are some sites to help you.

I found the following paragraph in the second site.

"The Conquest was the supreme achievement of the Norman race. It linked the history of England anew to Europe, and prevented forever a drift into the narrower orbit of a Scandinavian empire. Henceforth English history marched with that of races and lands south of the Channel."

This paragraph mentions Rollo - and I have proof that he is an ancestor also. The Books entitled - "The Washburn Family in America" describes this history quite well. Author is Brendan Washburn.

In 911, a group of Scandinavian raiders under the leadership of Rollo sailed up the Seine and forced the French king to cede French territory. The price the king asked was that Rollo become a subject of the king and swear loyalty. This he did, and the Norsemen settled a very small area in the north of France. Rollo, however, considered himself to be an independent ruler and aggressively set about increasing the territory under his control. This constant expansion of territory would become the hallmark of the Norman experience in history.

You have problems with your question. William the Conquerer was descended from Scandanavians and when he invaded England, a battle stopping the Scandanavians was won by the Anglo Saxons who, about ten days later, lost to Willie D.
