Do you give a certain percentage from your pay, or just pay a set amount to your emergency fund each time?

Add up all of your living expenses for one month, sans entertainment. After you've decided it's a just amount, multiply by six. You should have at least SIX months of liquid in an account for an emergency. It's called a rainy day fund. If you see you haven't used it up, shop around for CD rates. Credit Unions offer some of the best percentages around. Invest the money for 3, 6, 12, or 18 months.

I did 100 bucks a month. (missed sometimes when I needed it)
Put it into Sharebuilder. (Loewest cost to buy stocks in small amounts. and does dollar amounts allowing fractional shares. You don't have to buy a whole share at once)
I picked Dividend Paying stocks with low debt to equity ratios.
(long term holds.)
A few in my portfolio like ADM screamed through the roof. (Not a great buy now BTW but was then)
Over the last 4-5 years I've put in about $4000...
BUT I have $15000 in the account now!
And it's kinda fun to try and find the best gainer over time.
Nothing beats research.
For 20-50 bucks a paycheck. (I could'nt always afford it.)
That is pretty good.
BTW never buy less than $100... just put it in the money market account they have at 4.X percent then buy stocks out of the MM account.
$100 will have a 4% load... don't go any higher than that.
Larger block if you can afford it. The load gets smaller.
I also try to get most stocks that are at least 2-5 percent below the 200 day moving average. (Better gains has been my experience)

I have 4 kids so I might be saving less than other folks. I set aside $200/month in my Emergency Fund. Im looking at getting a part time job, so I will be able to put more in there monthly. With kids you never know what could happen.

I used to put what ever I had left over from my pay at the end of 2 weeks into the savings account but that started being to hard so I started just taking it myself, 80.00 into savings/mth. I also work over time so that I have a little bit extra.

I have a few different bank accounts. When I get paid, I put my money in one account. That account pays twenty five dollars a week into my savings account. I also put money in my savings when I have a little extra. I hardly notice it, and over time it will add up.

Set aside $50 from each pay check....put it in an compunded account and in 20 years with compunded interest, you could reach 1 million by leaving the money and not touching it.
