I don't play games. Downloading music, pictures and maybe a little video editing, and of course checking email. those are the things i would be doing with my laptop.

I've been pricing laptops for my brother, who's planning on buying one. With discounts/rebates Dell will cost around $1000 (Inspiron 1505). A similarly equipped Mac will run $1450 (MacBook - white). I was also looking at the HP dv series, it's a little more expensive than a Dell.

Here's min system specs I used for comparison.

2.0 Ghz Core Duo, 100 gb hd, 1 gb RAM, DVD burner.

Wars have been fought over that question. Our Dell laptops at work have been very reliable machines and we have to use Window based machines as our software is specifically written in that code. Having said that, I am writing this response on a Mac at home. If it were my money, I would get an Apple. They have less software problems and viruses are few. BTW iPhoto, iMovie and iTunes are all excellent programs for the Mac and they will probably ship with your new machine. High end graphics: go with Photoshop. High end video editing: Final Cut Pro.

Dell is, in my opinion, much better. I'm working off an older Dell laptop right now and runs just a reliably, even faster than my friend's brand new Apple. The only argument that Apple owners ever really have is that there are "less" viruses. That doesn't at all mean that you won't get one if your computer isn't secure.

I would go with the dell. That's what i am getting. Is it a dell E1505.
Anway back to the question. I would go for dell only because
1. it runs windows which more people are used to.
2. Lets you customize and actually gives you what you want
3. Dell has always been good for our family and friends
4. Dell has pretty much the best deals.
5. Dell gives discounts to students/teachers/ and other people. check that out.
One thing to tell you though. I would go for core duo or core 2 duo. Since your going to be doing multimedia objectives.

Apple could be good i guess. There prices are A LOT higher than dells but hey if it works for you.

Don't let them sell you on the name.

Chose a laptop based on what is inside....do your homework, and ask when you go to purchase it. Most electronic stores will have an open box with a substantal discount. Go for it, it has the same warrenty as the new with a $50+ discount

Personally, I will only buy HP or Gateway, execellect quality, great warrenties, and not having to pay for the "Name"

The biggest problem with Apple is that you have to buy everything especially compatable.

With everything else, you can buy anything and it should work

APPLE.

I've used dozens of PC's; my laptop is a Sony Vaio that set me back $3,500.

.. my next one will be an Apple. They don't crash, seem immune to viruses ... beautifully formatted.

Can't ask for more than that.

yuck, no Dell. They make horrible computers. If you want a pc, go with thinkpad instead.
