Colour

The colour of amber could occupy an entire web site to its self. Nearly every book written on amber contains a section or numerous references to the colour of amber. For the most part colour is described in two ways; turbidity and hue.

Turbidity is the extant to which it is clear or cloudy. Usually the more cloudy amber is the nearer to the colour white it becomes. An entire language has grown up to describe the different gradients between white and clear amber, here are just some examples:

I've never heard of amber of any other colour, it's usually an orangey/ yellow- it's actually the hardened sap of some tree, so if it is another colour it is probably meddled with in some way. Go to a decent jewellers and pay a good amount to make sure you don;t get plastic.

Amber is fossilised resin and is always a shade of yellow/orange although it can be quite light as well as a very deep burnt orange shade. The most prized bits of amber can have organic matter such as tiny flowers, leaves or even insects trapped within. Real amber feels slightly warm to touch - if it's cold and plasticky, chances are it's fake.

Welcome back Lazarus !! As far as your question goes I have only seen amber or brown coloured amber. I think the resin is from pine trees and that gives it the colour. Having said that I am sure fossilised resin from other trees would give a different colour. I think Olga would be in a better position to acquire the amber from her country as Riga in Latvia is a rich source of the product. (Always reluctant to answer your questions because you are a wind-up merchant !!!!)

Amber is basically fossilized tree sap and comes in different shades of gold/yellow depending on the type of tree it came from and the chemical composition of the sap as well as the conditions it was fossilized in. I've never heard about white amber but I suppose it is possible.

Amber is always red/golden colour, a good idea would be to buy some encrusted in silver rather than the usual gold, it will be cheaper and might give the illusion of being whiter than normal.
