You can do a fair job of cleaning the mattress:
You'll need a good cleaner....the OxyClean is a good idea but others like Bio-OX will do too. Apply to spots, wait about 5 minutes and then blot with clean WHITE towels. Press down and hold for 30 seconds to really absorb the moisture. You may need to treat again. Keep blotting until the spot is dry. You'll use a ton of white towels. If the stain remains after two washings, time for serious action.

Put some clear, non-sudsy household ammonia in a clean spray bottle. Take a clean, white, absorbent cloth and dampen it with water. Heat your iron to Medium-High. Spray the stain with the ammonia. Place the dampened cloth over the stain. Iron the cloth over the stained area. Make sure to keep your face away from the ammonia fumes. Respray the stain as needed and redampen the cloth (don't let it dry out). The spots should lift onto the cloth.

It shouldn't be your responsibility, but if your worried about losing your deposit, go to a charity shop or second hand shop and get a replacement. You could try cleaning it carefully, but a mattress is virtually impossible to clean the stains off. You shouldn't even be sleeping on it.

I agree with Shayna! they shouldn't hold you responsible for the mattress.. it should be tossed out every time someone moves out.
